Suchir Balaji , A 26 year Old Indian Origin Former OpenAI Employee has reportedly Died , by Suicide in his apartment in San Francisco.
He Said, I worked at OpenAI for almost 4 years and spent the last 1.5 years working on ChatGPT. At first, I didn’t know much about things like copyright or fair use of AI, but but became curious after seeing all the lawsuits filed against GenAl companies.”
“As I tried to understand the issue better, I realized that fair use might not be a strong defense for many generative AI products. The main reason is that these products can create alternatives that compete with the data they were trained on.”
ELON MUSK POSTED “HMM” WHILE REACTING TO THE NEWS OF BALAJI’S DEATH.
He also Said , “I’ve written a more detailed explanation of why I believe this in my post. Of course, I’m not a lawyer, but I think it’s important for everyone, even non-lawyers, to understand the law – not just the rules, but also why they exist.”
“That being said, I don’t want this to be seen as criticizing ChatGPT or OpenAI specifically. The issue of fair use and generative AI is much bigger than any one product or company.”
HE POSTED THAT, ON HIS X .
I strongly encourage machine learning researchers to learn more about copyright. It’s an important topic, and some past cases, like Google Books, aren’t as helpful as they might appear.”
